The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention held its Second Annual Harlem Men’s All Star evening on January 27th. The campaign encourages men in Harlem and the surrounding communities to get screened for prostate and/or colorectal cancer and those who completed screening were invited to a cocktail party with NBA stars past and present; over 400 men were screened this year. This year Earl Monroe, Herb Williams, David Lee, Bobby Simmons, Chris Duhon, and Brook Lopez, were present at the event, which was held at the Hip Hop Culture Center in Harlem. This year the campaign was generously underwritten by the Aetna Foundation and Carver Federal Savings Bank. Marita Monroe served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.
Lance Armstrong Kicks-off LiveStrong Day 2008 At The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care And Prevention
The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in Harlem celebrated its fifth anniversary on May 13, 2008 and was the proud host of the official kick off event of LiveStrong Day 2008, the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s nationwide initiative to raise cancer awareness. To commemorate the day’s events, Ralph Lauren, Lance Armstrong, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and center Founder Dr. Harold Freeman were on hand to offer remarks and answer questions.
In addition, Mr. Armstrong sat down with David Lauren to give an exclusive interview on his battle with cancer, life after and his involvement with the Ralph Lauren Center.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar: Spokesperson for Harlem Men’s Cancer Screening Campaign
The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention has partnered with the NBA Cares Program and the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 Theatre to educate African-American men on the importance of early cancer screening. NBA All-Star legend and Harlem resident Kareem Abdul Jabbar is the spokesperson for the campaign. The Harlem Men’s Cancer Screening Campaign seeks to screen African-American men 45 years and older for prostate cancer and men 50 years and older for colon cancer. The first 1000 men who complete a screening will be invited to a special event held at the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 Theatre, where Kareem Abdul Jabbar and other NBA legends will be in attendance. The Harlem Men All-Star event is scheduled for March 2007, but screenings must be completed before March. The Center accepts most insurance plans and low- or no-cost screening is available for a limited time for those who qualify.
